Producer Report by Lockett Bros, N. Berwick

Chilled strawberries in a glass

Château Unang lies among the foothills of Mont Ventoux, in the heart of Provence. The estate dates from the 9th century and produces exceptional wines from 20 hectares of vines, most of which are more than 30 years old.

Owners James and Joanna King’s overriding principal is to work with respect for both the local and wider environment seeking balance in everything they do. Both Scottish by descent, they have been living at magical Chateau Unang since 2003.

James is the winemaker at this unique domaine surrounded by oak forests, above the Nesque river bed overlooking the Vaucluse plateau. The high altitude of the vineyards and the effect of the Mistral wind give healthy, disease free grapes with complex aromas and flavours.

The Kings follow organic farming methods and have recently received full organic certification. The varieties grown are typical of those found in the Rhône Valley – Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Rousanne and Clairette – yet they achieve an unique personality here facing the Plateau du Vaucluse. The average yield is only 35 hectolitres per hectare resulting in wonderfully rich, complex and expressive wines which conjure up images of long lazy lunches enjoyed beneath a hot Provençal sun.

Chris and James outside the caveChris was lucky enough to have spent some time with James at the Chateau in May 2012 and was blown away not only by the beauty and serenity of the property but also by the high quality that the wines are achieving.
